Race the Helix is inspired by the family of 10-month old Ryleigh Shenal. Diagnosed with a rare chromosome deletion, Ryleigh is one of more than 25,000 patients who receive care through GGC’s state-of-the-art clinical, diagnostic and treatment programs each year. Coordinating Race the Helix is one family’s effort to raise awareness for the services provided by GGC that continue to make the Center at the forefront of knowledge on genetic disease and birth defects. Funds raised through the SC Birth Defects Foundation provide direct assistance to these services and programs. Ryleigh’s father and member of the Greenwood Endurance Team, Stephen Shenal, notes, The impact the Greenwood Genetic Center makes every day through the resources they provide are immeasurable. One day the search for a cure, a treatment or preventive measure for genetic disorders will not be necessary, and the GGC will help take us there. Race the Helix is one way to help raise the funds to make this vision a reality.
Tours of the Greenwood Genetic Center and other family-oriented activities will also be available October 15, before and after the race. McDonald’s breakfast will also be provided to all race participants. Registration forms are available online at www.ggc.org, and checks should be made out to Greenwood Endurance Team.
